Concept: Programs of Study

You can create program of study types to associate with each program of study you create. Example: Certificate, Major, and Minor.

You can only create program of study types for the institution of the owning academic unit. If you're a single institution, all programs of study types default to the single institution. If you have multiple institutions in your Workday tenant, you can create and maintain program of study types under each institution. You can only access the program of study type for the institutions you have access to.

. The program of study type category determines whether the program can:

Admit students.
Standalone as the student's educational objective.
Confer credentials.
Have a concentration (program focus).

Example: You can select the

Official Program

category for a

Major

program type. Or you can select the

Auxiliary Program

category for a

Study Abroad

program type.

You can configure program of study types in these categories to be programs to which you can add or stack other programs:

Formalized Joint Program
Non-Degree Program
Official Program
Undeclared Program

When you add a program, students can take it together with the program you or students add it to. Students must complete addable programs along with their primary program of study, unless you also configure them as stackable. Students can complete stackable programs, independently from their primary program of study, within the same academic record.

Workday provides the ability to bundle programs that students must complete together. You and your students can bundle any nonstandalone program with a standalone program on their academic record. Workday automatically bundles a program focus with its parent program. Bundling enables students to select additional programs with primary or nonprimary standalone (stacked) programs. Example: Double Majors, each with a program focus.

For standalone programs to complete together, you can use the addable configuration or the

Formalized Joint Program

type category.

You can set up policies to append new incoming programs to a student's existing academic record during matriculation. These policies apply to program of study types in these categories:

Formalized Joint Program
Non-Degree Program
Official Program
Undeclared Program

Because append policies only apply during matriculation, they:

Apply to programs of study that admit students.
Don't apply to the
Add Program of Study Event
or
Change Program of Study Event
business processes.

If you need to change the structure of a program of study, consider creating a new instance of the program with a new effective date instead of using the

Edit Program of Study

task.

Making substantial edits to a program of study with the

Edit Program of Study

task can set back students' academic progress if they have already completed some of its former requirements. You can separate instances of programs of study by giving them different effective dates, enabling students to retain their academic progress.

Workday recommends you use the

Edit Program of Study

task for less substantial changes, such as editing an abbreviation or fixing a spelling error.
