Concept: Educational Taxonomy

Concept: Educational Taxonomy

The Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) code is a classification of academic programs by the U.S. Department of Education. Every postsecondary school that receives federal student financial aid funds must use CIP codes to report their program data to the government. In accordance, Workday includes the CIP Codes for you to assign to your programs of study. Colleges and universities across the country assign CIP codes to their academic programs.
Workday uses this value for enrollment reporting to the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC). We recommend that you maintain programs of study with the latest CIP Code Edition, to reduce errors in the data you send to the NSC.

Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) Codes

In Workday, you can assign CIP codes to:
  • Programs of study.
  • Program focus.
  • General educational interests.
Workday maintains the classification codes as set by the Department of Education.
For a complete list, access the
View CIP Codes
report, secured to the
Set Up: Academic Units
domain. The Workday-delivered report is view-only. If you need to look up your CIP code, you can find it on your Form I-20.
