Concept: Repeated Courses for Federal Student Aid

When students repeat courses, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) provides guidelines for how much financial aid they can receive for those courses. Workday uses these guidelines to process repeated coursework for you.

Federal Student Aid (FSA) Repeat Logic

When calculating program of study (POS) load statuses for students, Workday considers:
  • Graded registrations that are a repeated attempt, or a course equivalent, of a prior course. As long as the repeated course satisfies a POS requirement, it counts in load status calculations.
  • Currently enrolled registrations that are repeats, or a course equivalent, of a prior course. Even though these courses are ungraded, they count in load status calculations because there's a chance that they can eventually satisfy a POS requirement.
  • The number of attempts at a course. The student can take the course 1 more time after receiving a passing grade and have it count for financial aid.
You can specify whether or not you use the Workday FSA repeat logic to calculate load statuses for financial aid. You can use:
  • The
    FSA Repeat Coursework Configuration
     on the
    Maintain Federal Student Aid Program Policy
     task to specify whether or not the POS uses FSA repeat logic.
  • The
    Repeatable for Additional Credit
     check box on the course definition to specify the maximum attempts for a course. You can use this configuration instead of, or in addition to, FSA repeat logic.
