Example: Create Program Areas

This example shows how to create a program area to group similar programs of study across academic units.
Stephen is a records administrator for AMU with access to the
Manage: Program Area Requirements
 domain. He wants to create a program area called Health Sciences to assign it to the Pharmacy Technician program of study.
Pharmacy Technician
 is a graduate program of study that belongs to the program area of
Health Sciences
 within the program area type called
Meta-Major
. A program of study can belong to multiple program areas as long as they belong to a different program area type.
That program area type also contains the program area of
STEM
. If there was a separate program area type called
Division
, Stephen could add
Pharmacy Technician
 to a program area there. Stephen can't add
Pharmacy Technician
 to
STEM
, because it belongs to the same program area type called
Meta-Major
.
  1. Access the
    Edit Academic Unit
     task.
    Option Description
    Name
    Select Alma Mater University.
    Effective Date
    Enter today's date.
    Institution
    Select the check box.
  2. Access the
    Maintain Program Areas
     task.
    Option Description
    Program Area Type
    Enter Meta-Major.
    Institution Academic Units
    Select Alma Mater University.
    Program Area
    Enter Health Sciences.
  3. Access the
    Create Program of Study
     task.
    Option Description
    Program of Study Type
    Select Major.
    Program Name
    Enter Pharmacy Technician.
    Code
    Enter P05.
    Owning Academic Unit
    Select Alma Mater University.
    Academic Level
    Select Graduate.
    Program Name
    Enter Pharmacy Technician.
    Program Area
    Select Health Sciences.
    First Entry Date
    Enter today's date.
Assign requirements to the
Health Sciences
 program area using the
Configure Academic Requirements
 task.
