Create Custom Business View Data Sources from Derived Datasets (Live)

You must be a Workday Financial Management customer.
You must have security access to business view base data sources available for custom business views. To see which domains secure business view base data sources, run the
Business View Base Data Sources
 report.
You can blend data from select Workday Financial Management business objects into custom business view data sources that you can use for reporting. To create a custom business view data source, you first create a
Derived Dataset (Live)
 in the
Data Catalog
 using an interactive data preparation experience similar to Prism Analytics. When you publish the derived dataset (live), Workday creates a tenanted business view data source with live data.
Example: You can join two Workday-delivered business view base data sources, filter the result as desired, and publish the resulting dataset to produce a single custom business view data source for report authors to use.
  1. Grant access to security domains.
    1. Grant users access to these security domains in the Prism Analytics functional area:
      • Prism Datasets: Create
      • Prism Datasets: Manage
      • Prism Datasets: Publish
      • Prism: Manage Data Source
      • Manage: Business Views
    2. Access the
      Activate Pending Security Policy Changes
       task to activate the security policy changes.
      If you aren't a Prism Analytics customer, you may need to wait 5 minutes after activating these security policy changes to have access to the
      Data Catalog
      .
  2. Create a derived dataset (live).
    1. Access the
      Data Catalog
      .
    2. Select
      Create
       >
      Derived Dataset (Live)
      .
    3. Choose a business view base data source and click
      Select
      .
    4. Specify a unique
      Dataset Name
       and
      Dataset API Name
      .
    5. (Optional) Create or edit tags and add a description.
    6. Save the dataset.
    7. Select
      Quick Actions
       >
      Edit Transformations
      .
    8. Add transformation stages to your pipeline and configure fields.
      For example, you can add a new stage from another pipeline based on a different base data source. See
      Supported Transformation Stages
       in Derived Dataset (Live).
    9. Save your derived dataset (live) and correct any validation errors that Workday displays.
  3. Configure data source security.
    1. From the dataset's related actions menu, select
      Security
       >
      Edit Data Source Security
      .
    2. Configure the required data source-level security domains and securing entities.
      Derived datasets (live) use the existing Prism Analytics dataset permission model. Field-level security is inherited from the base business view data sources and isn't configurable.
  4. Publish the derived dataset (live).
    Publish the derived dataset (live) from the
    Data Catalog
     or the dataset details view:
    • Data Catalog
      : From the context menu, select
      Publish
      .
    • View Dataset Details
      : Select
      Quick Actions
       >
      Publish
      , or
      Publishing
       >
      Publish Dataset
       from the related actions.
    You can check the publish status on the dataset's
    Activities
     tab. When publishing completes, Workday creates a tenanted business view data source corresponding to the derived dataset (live). See Business View Data Sources for more information.
  5. (Optional) Edit and republish the derived dataset (live).
    1. Edit the published derived dataset (live), save your changes, and publish again.
    2. Confirm the republish and resolve any warnings.
    Workday updates your custom business view data source.
