Derived Dataset (Live)

A Derived Dataset (Live) is a dataset type that enables you to blend data from Workday business objects using supported transformation stages. You create and manage derived datasets (live) along with other dataset types in the
Data Catalog
.
When you publish a derived dataset (live), Workday creates a tenanted business view data source. Reports built on these data sources retrieve live data. See Create Custom Business View Data Sources from Derived Datasets (Live) and Business View Data Sources for more information.

Supported Transformation Stages

Stage
Description
Import
Default stage; select a business view base data source.
Filter
Basic filters only; the advanced expression builder is not available.
Time
 data type fields are not supported.
Filter fields must be optimized fields. (Optimized fields have been designed for peak performance in business view data sources. This includes all indexed fields, along with select additional fields.)
Join
A join attaches columns horizontally side-by-side using a join key.
Only inner or left outer joins are supported. Join keys must be optimized fields.
When you select a self-referencing field in one join key, the other join key's available fields are narrowed to those that have the same returning business object.
Union
A union combines the results of two or more base data sources into a single dataset by stacking the rows vertically.
Union fields must be optimized.
Add Related Fields
Add fields from the underlying business object of an instance or multi-instance field from another stage in the pipeline.
The connection field must be optimized.

How a Derived Dataset (Live) Differs from a Derived Dataset

  • Derived datasets (live) are for building business view data sources that query live Workday data, whereas standard derived datasets are for building materialized data sources for reports and dashboards.
  • The interactive data preparation experience is similar to Prism Analytics, but custom business view data sources are available to all Workday Financial Management customers and don't require the Prism Analytics product.

Limitations of Derived Datasets (Live)

  • Calculated fields, advanced filter expressions, and
    Time
     data type fields are not supported.
  • Sample data, field statistics, download data, and
    View Dataset Lineage
     are not available.
  • You can't create calculated fields from the
    Edit Transformations
     page, but you can create them on the underlying base data source.
