Reference: Academic Requirements Naming Conventions

When naming of academic requirements, academic requirement groups, and restricted requirement groups, it’s important to remember that names:
  • Should be descriptive and follow a consistent naming convention.
  • Display on the student's profile, tasks, and reports.
Workday suggests naming conventions for these Academic Requirements functional areas:

Academic Requirements Naming Conventions

Academic Requirements (AR) are requirements that students need to complete to accomplish their educational objective. You can configure these requirements to be as broad or as granular as your institution requires. You can use these suggestions as naming conventions for academic requirements:
[Name of Requirement] - [Abbreviated Program of Study Code_Degree]
Examples:
  • Science Core 1 - BIOL _BS
  • History Elective - HIST_BA
[Abbreviated Program of Study Code]_[Name of Requirement]
Examples:
  • ENGL_Advanced Writing
  • COMM_Public Speaking
[Name of Requirement] - ([Degree].[Abbreviated Program of Study Code])
Examples:
  • General Education (BS.BIOCH)
  • Finance Executive Core (MS.FIN)

Academic Requirement Group Naming Conventions

Academic Requirement Groups can help you track the academic progress of students by organizing and tracking program requirements and general education requirements separately. Typically, an academic requirement group name represents the type or category of the requirement. Example: Major programs, Minor programs, General Education, and so on. You can use these suggestions when programs or institutions need specific naming convention for Academic Requirement Groups:
[Type of Requirement] - [Abbreviated Program of Study Code_Degree]
Examples:
  • Major Requirements - (BIOL_BS)
  • Minor Requirements - (HIST_BA)
  • Program Requirements - (MATH_MS)
[Abbreviated Program of Study Code]_[Type of Requirement]
Examples:
  • ENGL_Minor Requirements
  • COMM_Major Requirements
[Type of Requirement] ([Degree].[Abbreviated Program of Study Code])
Examples:
  • General Education (BS.BIOCH)
  • Major Requirements - (MS.FIN)

Restricted Requirement Groups Naming Conventions

Restricted Requirement Groups (RRG) enable you to configure exceptions to the default sharing policy for academic requirements at your institution. You can use these groups to either share registrations across academic requirements or restrict registrations to 1 academic requirement. You can use these suggestions when naming Restricted Requirement Groups:
[Program Name]-[Name of Requirement] over [Other Requirement]
Examples:
  • BIOL-Science Core 1 over BIOL-Science Core 2
  • HIST-Elective 1 over HIST-Elective 2
[Name of Requirement] do not share with [Other Requirement]
Examples:
  • ENGL_Advanced Writing do not share with ENGL_Literature
  • COMM_Public Speaking do not share with COMM_World Languages
[Name of Requirement] ([Degree].[Abbreviated Program of Study Code]) restricted from [Name of Requirement] ([Degree].[Abbreviated Program of Study Code])
Examples:
  • General Ed Science (BS.BIOCH) restricted from Biology 3 (BS.BIOCH)
  • Finance Exec Core (MS.FIN) restricted from Finance Elect (MS.FIN)
