Concept: Best Practice Guidelines for Reports on Dashboards
When adding reports to dashboards, we recommend that you:
- Load a maximum of 4 reports at a time, 2 on each row. Where possible, add reports to other dashboards in a perspective.
- Assess the complexity of the reports as high dimensionality reports can cause slower performance.
- Add and load a report first before adding a second report.
- Add a maximum of 2 sheets on the dashboard.
- Sync a maximum of 10 report parameter types.
When viewing reports from dashboards, you can:
- Download and add report or line notes.
- Drill down by available dimensions.
- Drag and resize reports.
- Copy and paste reports within and across dashboards.
- Use grid mode to expand reports and view the full toolbar.
When viewing reports from dashboards, you can't:
- Select repeating matrix reports because they use a non-HTML format.
- Edit them, or create snapshots from them.
- Run reports with prompting parameters. These are changed to non-prompting and display data based on the initial choice in the report.

Syncing Report Parameters with Perspective Context Filters
Perspective context filters display in the toolbar and apply to all dashboards in a perspective. When reports on a dashboard include parameters, you can configure these parameters to sync with the perspective context filters. The perspective context filter selections then drive the report results.
As you enable report parameters to sync with the perspective context filters, consider these behavior differences:
- Levels: When Level is a parameter on a report, you can sync it with the perspective context filters to drive report results.
- Dimensions and Attributes: When both reports and the containing dashboard include dimensions or attributes as parameters, you can sync these parameters to enable the perspective context filters to drive report results.
- Currency: You can sync the Currency parameter to enable the perspective context filters to drive report results. The currency on a dashboard is based on its level. To drive report results independently using available currencies in a report parameter, you can leave the Currency parameter option as not synced.
- Time: You can sync the Time parameter to enable the perspective context filters to drive report results. Since dashboards include the smallest time strata for an instance, the perspective context filters can update the report and match the report time strata.Example: On a dashboard, you select 9/18/2024 and on the report, you select Months as the time parameter value. When you sync the Time parameter, the 9/18/2024 selection on the dashboard updates the report results to display data for September 2024.
- Versions: If there's no version on the report, the global version picker drives report results. Also, the Current Version element in a report corresponds to the global version at the model level. To drive report results based on the global version picker, add Current Version as a parameter value to the report. Besides Current Version, you can't sync other version parameters between reports and the dashboard.
The perspective context filters display all accessible dimension values on a dashboard. If the report definition doesn't align with the perspective filter context selections, then you can receive errors.
Examples:
- You select a dimension value in the perspective context filter that's unavailable on the report as an available choice.
- You select an option in the perspective context filter with multiple values but the corresponding report parameter isn't enabled for multi-select in the parameter settings.
