Overview
Workday Absence Management enables clear, instructive, and dynamic tracking of time away from work for both employees and employers.
Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Describe the functional differences between time offs and leaves of absence.
- Assess the touchpoint considerations between Workday Absence Management and the rest of your system.
Time Off vs. Leave of Absence
Workday Absence Management consists of the following functions:
- Time Off
- Leave of Absence
The following table lists the functions and identifies their differences.
Time Off | Leave of Absence |

Generally, a day to a week | Generally, longer in nature |
Balance typically accrues on a period basis. | Includes an entitlement amount based on a configurable period of time. |
You typically know a worker's return date (e.g., they are going on vacation for a week). | You do not always know the worker's return to work date. |
Request includes each day the employee expects to be off work. | Request includes a range of dates, including the first day of leave and expected return date. |
No indicators. Lighter processing. | Can configure an indicator next to employees' names stating that they are "On Leave." |
No need for a business process to run to indicate a worker has returned to work after time off. | A business process must run to return a worker from leave. |
Example

- Leave of Absence: Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), short-term disability, and long-term disability

: It may be useful to create synonyms for the terms time off and leave of absence. Use the Edit Tenant Setup - Search
task to create these synonyms.Note
: There is no definitive definition of what constitutes a time off versus a leave of absence. Evaluate the best choice for each plan individually.
