Concept: Ask AI

Ask AI enables you to ask questions in natural language and receive a summary answer based on information across all or selected documents that you have permission to access. Unlike traditional search, where you manually read through individual documents, Ask AI summarizes the most relevant information with links to the source documents in seconds. You can also save, group, and share your questions to streamline contract reviews.

Search Scope

When you open Ask AI, Contract Management and Document Intelligence automatically sets the search scope based on the page you're currently viewing. You can change this scope. The available scopes depend on your current page and can include these search options:
  • All Documents
    : All accessible documents.
  • This Folder
: Only in the current folder.
  • This Group
: In a specific document group.
  • This Document
    : The current document.
  • Search Results
    : Your current search results.
  • Dashboards: (Contract Intelligence only)
    : Dashboard results.
  • Workflow Documents
(most recent version only): Only the current version of a workflow document.
  • Workflow Routing
: Within Ask AI you also have the ability to find the correct workflow through a simple conversation. See Access Workflows with Ask AI
Ask AI follows all folder-level access controls, so you see results from only the documents you have permission to view.
Additionally, Ask AI searches document data fields, including custom fields that may not be in the document text.

Status Indicators

Ask AI gives you transparency into the process of generating an answer and the sources being searched. It can also include prompts to clarify questions when needed.
Once Ask AI generates the response, we no longer display the status indicators and instead display the answer with source citations.

Source Verification

Ask AI offers transparency into the generated response allowing you to verify the source documents that informed the generated answer. You can:
  • Hover over a source button to preview the text excerpt from the cited document.
  • Select a source button to open the document, which automatically scrolls to the cited text.
  • Select a source button to open the Fields side panel and highlight the relevant data field, when the source is referencing a custom field.
When you ask a question about a single document, Ask AI includes inline citations and a Sources section in its response.

Conversations

You can interact with Ask AI in a conversational chat by:
  • Asking a follow-up question in the same conversation.
  • Changing the conversation's scope. Example: You can narrow your search from all documents to a single document.
  • Starting a new conversation to clear the previous chat history.

Saved Questions

You can save and organize questions for future use by:
  • Saving previously asked questions.
  • Organizing saved questions into groups.
  • Filtering between your private groups and groups shared with you.
  • Running a single saved question or all questions in a group at once.

Best Practices for Queries

To get the most relevant answers from Ask AI, follow these best practices:
  • Be specific. Provide as much context as possible, including document types, date range, parties, locations, or specific clauses.
  • Use natural language. You don't need to use special syntax or Boolean operators such as AND/OR. Phrase your query as a complete question.
  • Iterate on your questions. Start with a broad question and use the Conversations feature to ask follow-up questions that narrow the results and refine the answer.
Effective Query Structure
A well-formed query provides multiple points of context for Ask AI. Example: Show me all Master Service Agreements governed by California law that are set to expire in the next 90 days.
This query is effective because it specifies a document type (Master Service Agreements), a legal condition (governed by California law), and a time frame (expiring in the next 90 days).

Considerations

Ask AI:
  • Provides representative examples, not an exhaustive list of all matching documents. For exhaustive results, use Search.
  • Cites up to 25 documents to generate an answer.
  • Can’t answer all types of questions. It doesn’t answer:
    • Factual questions outside the document context. Example: weather forecast.
    • Counting or aggregation questions. Example: Total contract value or counting documents.
    • Requests for legal advice.
    • Questions about proprietary, technical, or confidential information. Example: writing code.
  • For Workflow documents:
    • Can only answer questions about the most recent version of a single document.
    • Can’t determine redlines.
    • Doesn’t consider document edits unless you save them as a new version.
    • Can’t answer questions about the workflow ticket, intake form, or comments.
