Reference: Performance and Usability of Cube Sheets

You can use many options available to improve the usability and performance of your cube sheets. Cube sheets can hold many dimensions, which can create cells in the tens of thousands or more. They can feel cumbersome to your end user. Use the table to improve the experience:

Evaluate the performance of accounts on your sheet so you can optimize accounts that take too long to load. See Evaluate Sheet Performance.
Review the sheet capacity.
Regularly review the capacity per version so that you can make changes to prevent the sheet from not displaying data. See View the Capacity of Cube Sheets.
Suppress zeros and blanks.
You can suppress zeros and blanks for the initial view, but also encourage best practices with your team as they arrange the cube sheet for their saved view.
Suppressing zeros or blanks to:
  • Reduce endless scrolling to find pertinent intersections.
  • Enable the
    Add Row
    button to reveal specific blank cells.
  • Improve load and save time because there are fewer cells to load.
Hide rollup totals.
By default, the cube calculates the totals of every dimension. When you have a lot of dimensions on the sheet, consider hiding the rollups to improve the load and save times. You can always report on the rollups using Dashboards, web reports, and OfficeConnect.
Set a scope for calculations.
By default, the cube calculates all account formulas from the start to the end of the version, even when you have time filters in place. When the cube includes a lot of calculations, consider limiting the calculations to the relevant time periods.
Keep dimensions in the filters.
The sheet performs faster when you set an initial view that keeps most of the dimensions in the filters, rather than the rows. Encourage users to keep the dimensions in the filters as much as possible when they save their sheet view.
Use filters in the initial view.
Select values from the filters in the initial view. Filtering the sheet by time, dimensions, attributes, and levels decreases the load time of the sheet. Encourage your users to save filtered views of their sheet.
Adjust the column widths.
Check the sheet in the
Sheets
area to see if your columns are too wide or too narrow. Having the ideal width improves usability.
Recalculate on demand.
By default, cube sheets calculate as the users enter data and save the sheet. Alleviate the burden of heavily calculated sheets by pausing calculations altogether until the users click the button.
Account optimizations.
  • Minimize the use of trigger or flag accounts. See Concept: Cube Sheet Calculations Must Evaluate to Zero.
  • For calculated accounts, use data entry overrides for actuals versions. See Add or Change Account Formulas and Overrides.
  • For linked accounts:
    • Remove chain-linked accounts. Instead link directly to the source data. Example: Account A links to Account B. Account B links to Account C. Link Account A to Account C.
    • Remove linked accounts that are on the sheet for analysis purposes. You can serve the same purpose with a report.
    • Unlink and delete legacy accounts that are no longer used.
    • Replace multiple linked accounts with 1 account with that links to multiple sources when possible.
Manage availabilities.
Reduce sheet availabilities for accounts, dimension values, levels, and attribute values. You might not need the calculated accounts to display on the sheet. You can still report on them with Dashboards, web reports, and OfficeConnect. See Change Availabilities in Cube Sheets.
