Concept: Parent Levels

In Adaptive Planning, we refer to parent levels and child levels to describe the hierarchical structure. A parent level is the same as a rollup level. You change the parent of levels with the
Rolls up to
 prompt in the
Level Details
 section.
Levels become parent levels when you add child levels to them. Settings of parent levels trickle down to child levels, even if you're cloning a level.

Data and Level Hierarchy Changes

When you change the parent level of a level:
  • Rollup values always change, even in locked and archived versions. Example: You change the parent level of Product Development from Company A to Company B. The data that used to contribute to Company A moves to Company B.
  • The data, formulas, and shared formulas stay with the level and don't change. Example: The data in Product Development stays with Product Development.
  • The values of formulas that reference the rollup change as the rollup changes, except in the case of archived versions.
Changing the parent level of a level might result in the loss of data. To prevent the loss of data, you can always export the data before you make changes. Otherwise, follow these guidelines:
  • Make all versions that are available to the child level also available to the intended parent level. You permanently delete the data of the child level in any versions that aren't also available to the parent level.
  • Add the intended parent level to the same sheets as the child level. Any sheet that doesn't have the parent, can't display the child level or the data of the child level. You can add the parent and the child level back to the sheet at any time and the data displays again.

(Only) Levels

When you add child levels to a level that previously didn't have any, Adaptive Planning automatically creates an (Only) child level.
Example: Company B had no child levels. You add Product Development as a child of Company B. We automatically create another child level, called Company B (Only). All existing shared formulas and data in the Company B level move to the Company B (Only) level. Both Company B (Only) and Product Development roll up to Company B.
