Concept: Work Breakdown Structure in Quotes
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) View
In the WBS view:
- Workday displays only 1 service at a time.
- Non-labor Items are not included.
- Tasks can only be added in a phase.
Dates
- When you change the Quote Start Date, the Service Start Date shifts accordingly.
- When you change the Service Start Date, the Phase Start Date also shifts. The phase start date is shifted based on the calendar day, but the number of working days in a phase stays the same.
- When the service has an:
- Effort EstimationofWith Phases and Tasks, you can’t change dates for phases.
- Effort EstimationofWith Phases, you can update the Phase End Date by:
- Changing start dates on a quote and service.
- Deleting a phase or service.
- Changing the End Date.
Phase Dates
- Changing Phase Start Date doesn’t change the date for non-labor items except when the date change impacts the Service Start Date.
- Editing phase date or deleting phase doesn’t shift the other phases.
- Date on non-labor items can be outside of phases/tasks date ranges but it must be inside of service date range.
Phase Dates when Splitting a Service into Phases
- All Phase Start Dates must be greater than or equal to the Service Start Date. At least 1 phase must equal the service start date.
- All Phase End Dates must be less than or equal to the Service End Date. At least 1 phase must equal the service end date.
- Phases can overlap, but no gaps should exist between phases within a service.
- When you split a service into phases, you can’t extend the duration of the service. You must first complete splitting into phases, and after that you can edit the start and end dates for the phases on the quote grid to extend the service duration.
Task Dates when Splitting a Service into Tasks
- Task Start Date must be greater than or equal to the first Phase Start Date. At least 1 task must equal the first phase start date.
- Task End Dates must be less than or equal to the last phase end date. At least 1 task must equal the last phase end date.
- Tasks must span the entire duration of all the phases, and you can’t change the phase duration while splitting into tasks.
- You can’t extend the duration of a service at the time of splitting it into phases. You must first complete splitting into phases, and after that you can edit the start and end dates for the phases on the quote grid to extend the service duration.
- Tasks can overlap but no gaps should exist between tasks within a phase.
Allocations
- When you have services withEffort EstimationofWith PhasesorWith Phases and Tasks, you must add the role allocation in the WBS view first, then edit in theTimelineview.
- In theTimelineview:
- When a service has multiple phases or tasks, the allocations are split evenly across the phases or tasks in the specified date range.
- When a service has only 1 phase or task, the allocation is split evenly across the number of working days.
- When splitting a service, if phases or tasks are overlapping, Workday splits the allocation evenly among the overlapping periods.
Delete
- Deleting a phase doesn't shift the other phases/tasks.
