Example: Enter Net Income Data for Full Consolidation

This example illustrates how to enter data so that it flows and rolls up as expected for full consolidation.
Grandparent Company owns 80% of a subsidiary company called Parent Company. Parent Company owns 80% of a subsidiary called Child Company. You want the Net Income account in the Income Statement to flow properly into the Net Asset account in the Balance Sheet. You also want data to roll up to the parent company with adjustments based on ownership.
Your model:
  • Current Year version.
  • Calendar set up with Months, Quarters, and Years.
  • Your Income Statement is a standard sheet that includes the Net Income general ledger account.
  • Your Balance Sheet is a standard sheet that includes the Equity general ledger account.
  1. Go to
    Sheets
    .
  2. From the
    Level
    prompt, select
    Parent
    .
  3. From the sheet list, click
    Income Statement
    to open the sheet.
  4. In the first column, right-click and select
    View by Level
    .
  5. From the
    Account
    drop-down prompt, select
    Net Income (Pre-Adj)
    .
    Remember that this account holds the raw net income generated by each company.
  6. Enter these values in each row:
    • For Child, enter
      100,000
      , right-click, and select
      Copy Forward
      >
      Copy To End
      .
    • For Parent (Only), enter
      200,000
      , right-click, and select
      Copy Forward
      >
      Copy To End
      .
  7. Click the
    Save
    button.
  8. On the first column, right-click and select
    View by Account
    .
  9. From the
    Level
    drop-down, select
    Parent
    .
    The value in the Net Income rollup row is 280,000.
  10. Expand Net Income to see the contributing values:

    • The value for Net Income (Pre-Adj) is 300,000. The value sums the net income generated by Parent (200,000) and the net income generated by Child (100,000).
    • The value for Minority Interest Adjustment is -20,000, an auto-generated value. The value comes from the 100,000 you entered for Child in the Net Income (Pre-Adj) account and the 80% ownership you entered in Consolidation Percentages sheet. See Example: Set Up Full Consolidation and Assign Ownership Percentages.
  11. From the breadcrumbs, click
    Sheets
    .
  12. From the sheet list, click
    Balance Sheet
    to open it.
    You're already in the Parent level.
  13. From the toolbar, click
    Display Options
    .
  14. Clear the
    All
    check box to clear all of the time periods. Then, click the check boxes in the
    Quarter
    column for
    2018
    and
    2019
    rows.
  15. Click
    OK
    .
  16. In the rows, expand Net Assets to see the auto-generated data:

    • Minority Interest, Beginning displays the zero initial balance through the year.
    • YTD Minority Interest uses the Default Formula that you created. The value is the swapped sign of -10,000, from the Minority Interest system account. It accumulates through the months, at 30,000 per quarter.
    • In Q1 of 2019, the accumulated value of YTD Minority Interest moves to the Minority Interest, Beginning.
