Create Custom Dimensions
Security:
Model includes sheets, accounts, dimensions and formulas
permission.Custom dimensions are metadata groupings with lists of values. Along with levels, time, and accounts, custom dimensions create a specific data point. After you create the dimension, you create the values of the dimension. Then you can add them to sheets in order to associate them with data.
You can create dimensions in these ways:
- In , use the toolbar to create 1 at a time, or use the import button to import several new dimensions and values.
- InIntegration, use the dimension loader.
- InIntegration, use the API.
- SelectModelingfrom the main menu.
- ClickDimensions.
- From the toolbar, clickCreate new dimension.

Clear the check box when you want to:- Use the dimension to tag levels.
- Create a hierarchical dimension value list.
Use on levelsTo select this check box, clear theList dimensioncheck box.Select the check box to make the dimension a level dimension, which enables you to tag levels with the dimension values. The dimension displays as a drop-down prompt in the level settings when you enable this option. See Concept: Level Dimensions and Attributes.Clear this check box to enable hierarchical dimension values.Data import automatically creates dimension valuesSelect the check box so that data imports also add any new dimensions.When you also selectedUse on levels, the check box enables level imports to add new dimension values.Keep sortedSelect the check box to sort the dimension values in alphabetical order.Clear the check box to arrange the order as you like.When you select this option, the order of the dimension values can change when you change:- Display name format of the dimension.
- Names of the dimensions values.

Use mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheetSelect the check box to use the dimension values as mapping criteria for derived dimensions. See Create Custom Dimension Values.To disable, you must remove the dimension mappings. See Remove Dimension Values from Derived Dimensions with Import or Steps: Remove Dimension Values from Derived Dimensions in Dashboards. - (Optional) In theCustom Propertiessection, clickAdd propertyand enter the name of the property.Completing this step creates a text field in theCustom Propertiessection of the custom dimension values. The label of the text field is the name that you enter here. You can add up to 5 properties. Properties don't display in reports and charts. You also can't reference properties in formulas. - Click the arrow next to the save icon and select:
- Save: Saves the dimension.
- Save and New: Saves the dimension and starts a new dimension.
We automatically create an
Uncategorized
value for the dimension. We automatically associate all existing data in your model with the Uncategorized
