Reference: Performance and Usability of Modeled Sheets

Modeled sheets can hold many records and columns, which can feel cumbersome to your end users. You can use many options available to improve the usability and the performance.

Performance Fixes

Use the table to find ways of optimizing the sheet performance:

Review sheet metrics from the

Check the usage, such as how many saves and views, and performance, such as load time. See Check Sheet Metrics.
Review account performance on sheets in the
Planning Center
.
Evaluate the performance of accounts on your sheet so you can optimize accounts that take too long to load. See Evaluate Sheet Performance.
Set a scope for calculations.
By default, the modeled  sheet calculates all account formulas from the start to the end of the version, even when you have time filters in place. When the version includes a lot of time periods, consider limiting the calculations to the relevant time periods. See Set the Scope for Calculations in Cube and Modeled Sheets.
Reset the maximum rows.
Limit the maximum rows that your modeled sheet displays with the
Modeled Sheet First Page Size
 in the
General Settings
 of the Administration area. See Reference: General Setup.
Save filters in the display options as an initial view.
  1. Open the sheet in the
    Sheets
     area.
  2. Click
    Display Options
    .
  3. Go through each tab to optimize the view with the various filters.
  4. Click the
    Set as default for all users
     check box.
  5. Encourage your users to save similarly filtered views of the sheet.
Recalculate on demand.
By default, modeled sheets calculate as the users enter data and save the sheet. Alleviate the burden of heavily calculated sheets by pausing calculations altogether until the users click the button.
Encourage users to select a child level from the
Sheets Overview
 page before opening the sheet.
The sheet will have fewer records to load.

Usability Fixes

Use the table to fix these common usability issues:

Users need to scroll left and right because there are so many columns.
  • Enable your users to hide certain columns. Find this option in the right panel when you highlight the column from the center panel.
  • Freeze columns so that they always remain in view as the users scrolls. Find this setting in the
    Settings
     tab of
    Sheet Properties
    . 
  • Encourage users to change column widths as needed, which they can save as part of their sheet view.
Users enter the wrong kind of data in the cells.
Create validation rules that provide errors or warnings to help your users enter the correct kind of data. Find this option in the
Sheet Summary
 links. See Set Up Modeled Sheet Data Validation Rules.
The user often leaves cells blank.
Make the cells in columns required. This requirement prevents the user from saving the sheet when cells are blank in the required columns.
Find this option in the right panel when you highlight the column from the center panel. Remember that you can't enable users to hide required columns.
