Validate Formulas

Validate Formulas

Security:
Model includes: sheets, accounts, dimensions, and formulas
permission.
Formula Validation finds formula errors per version and provides links and details to help you troubleshoot and resolve the errors. We validate the formula for correct syntax, circular references, and so on, as you create formulas. However, you can introduce formula errors as you make changes to your model structure. This includes changes to:
  • Calendar
  • Versions
  • Levels
  • Accounts
  • Sheets
You can use the Formula Validation feature in Modeling to check all formulas, including account formulas, and formulas entered into sheets. It does not find formulas on reports.
After you run a validation, we provide information in the
Summary
section:
  • Total Computations Required
: The total amount of calculations within the selected version.
  • Total Computation Performed
: The number of calculations that were checked to reach the maximum errors found, which you specify.
  • Errors Found
: The total number of locations with errors. This number might differ from the errors displayed when you select
    Exclude Reference Errors
    .
When the
Total Computations Required
is larger than the
Total Computations Performed
, you have reached the maximum errors. When the Formula Validation finds the maximum errors, it stops performing the computations of the remaining formulas. You must first resolve the displayed errors and then run the validation again.
In the
Error Details
section, we provide a list of errors with the account, level, and time period. The error message is a link to Explore Cell. From there, you can click through to resolve the error. For account default formulas, we list the error for every level. Resolving the error in the account settings fixes it for all levels.
  1. Select
    Modeling
    from the main menu.
  2. Select
    Formula Validation
    from the
    Accounts
    section.
  3. Refine your validation with these options:
    选项 描述
    Version prompt
From the top navigation menu, select the version that you want to validate.
    Max Errors
Select up to 500. This is the maximum displayed, not the maximum checked and found.
    Exclude Reference Errors
Removes valid formulas that reference another cell or account with an error. Fixing the source of the error automatically resolves reference errors. This also excludes errors in level and account rollups.
  4. Click
    Refresh
    .
  5. Ctrl-Click the error message to open Explore Cell in another browser tab.
Opening Explore Cell in a separate tab enables you to return to the Formula Validation and refresh your search.
  6. From Explore Cell, you can:
    • Link to the sheet to correct the formula error.
    • Link to the account settings to correct the
      Default Formula
      .
    • Drill through Explore Cell to find the source of the error.
  7. To correct Shared Formulas, select
    Formulas
    from the main menu.
