Resolve View Dependencies to Delete Dimension Values

The
View Dependencies
 link is in the
Dimension Value Details
 section of dimension value settings. The link opens a table with a series of tabs. The tabs provide the locations where the model uses the dimension value. Knowing where the model uses dimension values helps you manage dimension values.
Tabs with the information icon include locations that you must resolve before you delete the dimension value. The blue dots in the dimension list also indicate that you must resolve dependencies before you can delete the value.
Tabs without the information icon have locations that you can ignore. Blue dots don't display in the dimension list for dimension values with only these kind of dependencies. Although you can delete them without resolving dependencies, you will cause changes to the model and could cause errors. We recommend that you resolve all dependencies before deleting a dimension value.
To delete a dimension value or make it unavailable in a version, you must remove it from data, even in locked and archived versions. Instead of deleting an in-use dimension value, consider making it unavailable for new versions to maintain historical data.
  1. Select
    Modeling
     from the main menu.
  2. Click
    Dimensions
    .
  3. From the list, expand the dimension to display all the values.
  4. When the value has a blue dot, select the dimension value from the list.
  5. From the
    Dimension Value Details
     section, click
    View Dependencies
    .
  6. As you resolve the tabs, consider:
    Tab
    Actions to Take
    Standard Data
    Security:
    Editable Sheet Access
     permission.
    You can't delete the dimension value because it's on a split in a standard sheet. Even when the split has no data, the dimension value in the split prevents you from deleting it. To resolve, either delete the split or select a different dimension value. See Remove Dimension Value Splits from Standard Sheets.
    Deleting the split removes the data stored in the split.
    Modeled Data
    Security:
    Structure Import
     permission.
    You can't delete the dimension value because it's on a modeled sheet row or split. Even when the row has no other data, the dimension value in the row prevents you from deleting it. To resolve, remove the dimension value from the sheet with the export and import function. See Change Level Availabilities in Sheets.
    When you need to resolve many dimension values that are in heavy use in modeled sheets, you can erase the data. From the
    Sheet Summary
    , click
    Erase all Data
    . See Get to the Sheet Summary to Edit Sheets.
    Cube Data
    You can't delete the dimension value because it's on a cube sheet. To resolve, remove the dimension value from the sheet. See Change Availabilities in Cube Sheets.
    Removing the dimension value from the cube sheet, deletes the associated data. When you want to save the data, go to the cube sheet, filter it to find the dimension value, and replace the dimension value for each occurrence.
    When you need to resolve many dimension values that are in heavy use in cube sheets, you can erase the data. From the
    Sheet Summary
    , click
    Erase all Data

    Derived Dimensions
    Security:

    You can't delete the dimension value because it's part of a mapping rule for derived dimensions. To resolve, see Remove Dimension Values from Derived Dimensions with Import.
    Level Dimension
    You can't delete the dimension value because it tags a level. To resolve, remove the tags. See Remove Dimension Value Tags from Levels.
    Reports
    Security:
    Modify All Reports
     permission.
    You don't need to resolve before deleting the dimension value. The dimension value is on a report, or a report calculation refers to the dimension value. When you delete the dimension value:
    • We automatically remove it from report, which can change the report significantly.
    • Report calculations referencing the dimension value return an error in the report.
    To resolve, when the tab indicates that the report is in a:
    • Shared folder, you can edit the report to update the formulas. You can also remove the dimension value from the report builder.
    • Personal folder, you can inform the user of the expected change. The tab includes the username of the report owner.
    Shared Formulas
    Security:

    You don't need to resolve before deleting the dimension value. The shared formulas that reference the dimension value return errors after you delete the dimension value. To resolve remove the dimension value from the formulas. See Remove Dimension Values from Shared Formulas.
    Calculated Accounts
    You don't need to resolve before deleting the dimension value. Account formulas that reference the dimension value return errors after you delete the dimension value. To resolve, remove the dimension value from references in the formulas. See Remove Dimension Values from Formulas in Calculated Accounts.
    Transactions
    Security:
    Import to All Locations
     permission.
    You don't need to resolve. The dimension value tags transaction data. We automatically remove the dimension value from the transaction data when you delete the value.
    Link Properties
    You don't need to resolve before deleting the dimension value. Account links use the dimension value as
    Link Filters
     or
    Applied Dimensions
    . When you delete the dimension value, we automatically remove the dimension value from those fields.
    Cube Entries
    Security:

    You don't need to resolve before deleting the dimension value. Users have referenced the dimension value in formulas that they entered in the cells of cube sheets. When you delete the dimension value, these cells might return errors. To resolve, find each cell with the formula reference. See Remove Dimension Values from Cube-Entry Formulas
    Other Entries

    You don't need to resolve before deleting the dimension value. There are formulas that reference the dimension value in the:
    • Cells of standard sheets.
    • Timespan cells of modeled sheets.
    When you delete the dimension value, these cells might return errors. To resolve, remove the formula references. See Remove Dimension Values from Cell-Entered Formulas in Modeled and Standard Sheets.
    Allocation Rules

    You don't need to resolve before deleting the dimension value. When you delete the dimension value, the weight formula or the formula of an allocation rule returns an error. To resolve update the rules. See Remove Dimension Values from Allocation Formulas.
