Example: Build the Initial Balance Sheet for Full Consolidation

This example illustrates how to build your initial balance sheet for full consolidation. The initial balance sheet is a standard sheet that accumulates the net income year to year. This example also illustrates how to seed the initial balances of the net assets accounts. When completed as part of full consolidation, the data rolls up in the level hierarchy with the appropriate minority adjustments.
Parent Company owns 80% of a subsidiary called Child Company. You want the Net Income account in the Income Statement to flow properly into the Net Asset account in the Balance Sheet. You also want data to roll up to the parent company with adjustments based on ownership.
Your model:
  • Actuals version.
  • Calendar set up with Months, Quarters, and Years.
  • Your Income Statement is a standard sheet that includes the Net Income general ledger account.
  • Your Balance Sheet is a standard sheet that includes the Equity general ledger account.
  1. Go to
    Modeling
    .
  2. From the
    Sheets
    menu, click
    Level Assigned Sheets
    .
  3. Click the
    New Sheet
    button.
  4. For the name, enter
    Initial Balance for Net Assets
    and click
    Next
    .
    Standard
    is the default for the
    Create new sheet
    drop-down prompt, so you don't need to specify.
  5. From the
    Select Account
    sections, select
    Equity
    from the
    Type
    drop-down prompt.
  6. From the results, highlight the
    Net Assets, Beginning
    account and click
    Add to Group
    .
    The
    Show initial balance
    check box is automatically enabled.
  7. Click
    Next
    .
  8. To skip adding dimensions, click
    Next
    again.
  9. Click the
    Start in view by level mode
    check box and click
    Next
    .
  10. From the level list, click the check boxes next to ,
    Parent
    and
    Child
    and click
    Create Sheet
    .
  11. Go to
    Sheets
    .
  12. From the version prompt, select
    Actuals
    .
    If you use subactual versions, you must select a subactual to enter data.
  13. From the
    Level
    prompt, select
    Parent
    .
  14. From the sheet list, click
    Initial Balance for Net Assets
    to open the sheet.
  15. From the account prompt, select
    Net Assets, Beginning
    .
  16. Enter
    0
    in the
    Initial Balance
    column for the
    Parent (Only)
    , and
    Child
    rows.
  17. From the account prompt, select
    YTD Minority Interest
    .
  18. Enter
    0
    in
    Initial Balance
    column for the
    Parent (Only)
    and
    Child
    rows.
  19. Click the
    Save
    button.
Through time periods, each display value in the Balance Sheet for both accounts continues to accumulate building on the initial balance you entered on this sheet.
Enter data in the Net Income accounts.
