Concept: Levels
Levels represent departments, profit centers, cost centers, or geographical regions. Every
data point represents an intersection of levels, versions, and accounts. Changes to levels
apply to all versions, even locked or hidden versions.
Level Hierarchy
The level hierarchy
is the organization structure of your instance. This structure can be divisional,
functional, or departmental. The level hierarchy also determines how the account data
rolls up or calculates at each level. The account settings determine the rollup
calculations.
If you use Consolidation, the level hierarchy can also represent
ownership of subsidiaries.
You can see the level hierarchy by going to:
- Modeling > Levels.
- Sheets.
- TheElementstab inReports.
Terms That Describe the Level Hierarchy
Term | Description |
|---|---|
Parent or ancestor | Levels that hold the aggregated value of the levels that roll up to
it. |
Child or descendant | Levels that roll up to another level. |
Siblings | Levels that share the same direct parent level. |
Top-level | The ancestor of all levels in your structure. You can't change the settings
of the top-level. |
(Only) Levels | Workday automatically creates the (Only) level for every parent level.
Example: You can use the (only level) when a parent level generates income or
expenses that don't belong in any child levels. (Only) levels don't display in the
level hierarchy, but they display in sheets and reports. |
Leaf | Levels without child levels. In sheets, you must enter data at leaf
levels. |
Level Rollup Calculations
The
account setting, Level/Dimension Rollup
, indicates how data rolls
up through the level hierarchy.
Account Types | Description |
|---|---|
General ledger | Parent levels display values that sum the values of their child
levels. |
Custom, assumptions, cube, and modeled | You can select from several options. |
Metric | The rollup level first sums the accounts that contribute to the formula and
then applies the calculation of the metric account. |
Consolidation | The percent of ownership and the consolidation method you select for
Consolidation contributes to the calculation. |
Level Settings
You can set most level settings at parent levels. Most child
settings are read-only because they inherit settings from parent levels. With level
settings, you can:
- Reorganize the hierarchy.
- Limit the availability of levels to versions.
- Create alternate level rollups or hierarchies.
You can set up level owners in the user profiles or in .
