Columnar View on Cube Sheets

With this release, we enable you to toggle supported cube sheets between the standard cube view and a flattened columnar view. In columnar view, each level, account, dimension, and attribute displays in its own column so you can enter and review leaf-level data in a spreadsheet-like layout.

Business Benefits
This improves multi-dimensional planning efficiency by letting users switch between cube view for aggregation and analysis and columnar view for faster, row-based data entry without workarounds such as modeled sheets for high-dimensionality cube data.
Changes
We add a new
Columnar
toggle on the cube sheet toolbar in standalone sheets, dashboards, and hubs. You can now select Columnar to pivot the sheet from nested cube rows into a tabular layout with Level
in the first column, Account
in the second column, and remaining dimensions and attributes to the left of the timespan. You can select Columnar
again to return to cube view. If you have unsaved changes, Adaptive Planning prompts you to save or discard them before switching views.In columnar view, we display only rows where data is present. We display rows with a zero value; we suppress rows with no data. Suppress zeros is always enabled in columnar view and can't be changed in
Display Options
. We automatically truncate the initial load to 2,000 rows by default.We add new columnar view pickers on the parameter bar for each pinned dimension and attribute (except time). You can use the pickers to filter the grid, and you can search within each picker. When you select a parent dimension value, we display all children in the sheet.
We support these account types in columnar view:
- Cube standard, entered GL/custom, and assumption accounts. You can edit this data.
- Calculated and linked accounts. This data is read-only.
We hide
Change Dimensions
and Swap Rows and Columns
in columnar view. You can sort ascending or descending on Level, Account, and dimension columns.You can open
Display Options
in columnar view to configure time strata visibility and default settings for all users. Suppress Zeros
and Hide Row Totals
aren't available in columnar view.You can edit cells, use the formula bar (including viewing the actual formula), add rows, delete rows, copy and paste cells, and save the sheet in columnar view. Cell locking behavior matches cube view.
We support scenario versions and actuals overlay in columnar view. On dashboards and hubs, columnar view respects global level and dimension filters.
We remove rows restricted by dimension access rules from the columnar grid.
Columnar view doesn't support hierarchies. This view supports dimension and attribute columns leaf values only.
We disable columnar view when an alternate calendar is selected. Enterprise Interface Platform (EIP) doesn't support columnar view.
We add a new
Columnar View First Page Size
field on the Company setup page. The default value is 2,000. This setting controls the number of rows loaded on the first page in columnar view and is separate from the modeled sheet first page size setting.What Do I Need to Do?
No setup is required to use columnar view. To change how many rows load on the first page, set
Columnar View First Page Size
on the Company
setup page. Inform planners that they can select the new Columnar
toggle on supported cube sheets to enter data in the flattened layout.What Happens if I do Nothing?
If you do nothing, cube sheets continue to open in cube view by default. Users with access to supported cube sheets can select the
Columnar
toggle on the toolbar to use the new view. Existing sheet data, security, and cube view behavior are unchanged until a user switches views.Test Scenarios
- Open a cube sheet with multiple dimensions in standalone view. Toggle to columnar view, filter with pickers, edit a cell, save, and toggle back to cube view.
- Add the same cube sheet to a dashboard or hub. Toggle to columnar view and confirm global filters apply.
- Open a scenario version and confirm columnar view loads and saves correctly.
- Confirm columnar view is unavailable when an alternate calendar is selected and when accessing the sheet through EIP.
Examples
You maintain an operating expense cube sheet with level, cost center, department, and location dimensions. In cube view, nested rows make it hard to see which department and location you are planning. You select
Columnar
to display each dimension in its own column, filter cost centers with the pickers, and enter plan data row by row—similar to working in a spreadsheet. When you need to review rollups, you switch back to cube view.Change Log
