Adaptive Planning MCP Server
Preview Date: 2026-08-15.
Workday Adaptive Planning now provides an MCP Server that enables customer AI agents to access Adaptive Planning data and model context through a secure, standardized interface.
To use the Adaptive Planning MCP server in Preview, you must opt in to the Universal Main Service Agreement (UMSA). To determine your subscription service agreement:
- Select your profile avatar on Community.
- Select Profile.
- On your profile page, select your organization's name, which is beneath your name and next to your job title.
- View your Subscription Service Agreement value. If the value is MSA, you must opt in to the Universal Main Service Agreement (UMSA).
Business Benefits
- Enables customers to connect their AI agents to Adaptive Planning without building custom point-to-point integrations.
- Improves planning visibility by letting agents explore sheet data, metadata, versions, levels, dimensions, and modeled sheet data within the user's permission scope.
- Helps customers combine Adaptive Planning context with external operational or market data for narrative reporting, variance analysis, and driver-based planning insights in an external AI workspace.
Changes
- Customers can now connect their AI agents to the Adaptive Planning MCP Server.
- The MCP Server exposes these tools. Available tools vary by user permissions, access rules, and tenant configuration.ToolDescriptiondata-dimensional-queryExecutes a dimensional data query to retrieve multidimensional financial data from Adaptive Planning.metadata-search-by-termSearches planning metadata by keyword and returns matching elements with their IDs, names, and metadata types.metadata-search-by-idsLooks up metadata details (names, codes, and attributes) for specific dimension value IDs.data-modeled-queryRetrieves rows from a modeled planning sheet.sheet-getLists all planning sheets visible to the authenticated user, including cube, standard, and modeled sheets.sheet-get-definitionRetrieves the definition including the structure and schema of a planning sheet.model-account-get-formulaGets the formula overview for accounts in the planning model.
- For standalone instances, OAuth API Client registration requires Admin Access and General Setup permissions
- For Workday-enabled instances, administrators need access to these domains in the System functional area:
- Set Up: Tenant Setup - Security
- Set Up: Adaptive Planning API Access
- Security Administration
- MCP tool calls use the same security model as public Adaptive Planning APIs. Workday enforces Adaptive Planning permissions, access rules, and MCP availability settings on every tool call.
- All MCP tool calls are recorded in the audit logs. The audits API requires the Admin Access and Activity Auditing permissions.
What do I Need to Do?
No action is required unless you want your AI agents to connect to Adaptive Planning MCP. Customers must configure authentication and connect their agents to the correct regional MCP endpoint before they can use Adaptive Planning MCP tools:
- Standalone Adaptive Planning instances require API client registration and OAuth token retrieval in Adaptive Planning.
- Workday-enabled Adaptive Planning instances require Workday client registration and OAuth token retrieval in Workday HCM or Financials.
