Enable Dimension Mapping for Custom Dimensions
- Create the custom dimensions that you want to use as mapping dimensions and derived dimensions. See Create Custom Dimensions.
- Security:Model Includes: sheets, accounts, dimensions, and formulaspermission.
Derived dimensions increase the efficiency of data entry tasks. A derived dimension has values that auto-populate in modeled sheets based on mapping rules.
Terms we use:
- Derived dimension values: The dimension value that auto-populates on sheets.
- Mapping dimension values: The dimension values that users select in sheets to trigger the auto-population of the derived dimension value.
- Dimension mapping rules: The logic that maps the mapping dimension values to the derived dimension values.
- Dimension mapping: The process of creating dimension mapping rules through dashboards or through dimension imports.
Example: Job Seniority values, like Junior and Senior, derive from a combination of Job Titles, like Product Engineer and Associate Product Engineer, and Job Codes, like E1 and E2.
- SelectModelingfrom the main menu.
- ClickDimensions.
- From the list of dimensions, click the dimension that you want to make a derived dimension. The derived dimension is the dimension with the values that you want to auto-populate on sheets.
- In theDimension Detailssection, click theUse mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheetscheck box.
- From the prompt that displays, select the mapping dimension. When users select the values of the mapping dimension on the sheet, the derived dimension value auto-populates.
- (Optional) ClickAdd Dimensionto add another mapping dimension. When you add more than 1 mapping dimension, the derived dimension values auto-populate based on the various combinations of the mapping dimension values.
- ClickSave.
- (Optional) To clear theUse mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheetscheck box and remove the derived dimension capability, you must first delete all the dimension mapping rules.
To make Job Seniority a derived dimension from Job Title and Job Code:
- SelectJob Seniorityfrom the dimension list.
- Click theUse mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheetscheck box.
- From the prompt, selectJob Title.
- ClickAdd Dimension.
- From the new prompt, selectJob Code.
Now you can map Job Code and Job Title to Job Seniority.
